Action Steps for New Christians

When someone confesses and believes in Jesus Christ, a miracle happens in the spiritual realm. You become a child of God. John 1:12 “But as many as received Him (Jesus), to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name”. It is what Jesus called being “born again” (John 3:3).

Salvation is not a small thing. It is a life-changing experience. There is a transformation that happens inside of a person. It may even be hard to explain to others at first, but there is a change that takes place. This is not to say that all of life’s difficulties are suddenly overcome. It takes time for a child to grow, to learn to talk and to walk and to eventually run in the ways of God.

There are important things for new followers of Jesus to do in order to grow in His ways. The most important one is to commune with Jesus constantly. Stay close to Him. He loves you. Pray often to Him. Ask Him to teach you to pray. His followers said, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1).

Get a Bible that has an easy translation for you to read. One example would be the New Living Translation. Read the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament first. These are primarily about Jesus. Eventually, you should become familiar with all of the New Testament and the Old Testament.

Locate and attend a Christian, Bible-believing church. Not all modern groups that call themselves a church believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord. So, make sure that you attend a church that does believe in Him. It is important for you to be around others who also believe in Jesus and who live for Him. The Bible calls it fellowship (Acts 2:42).

Water baptism is something that new converts should do (Mark 16:16). It acknowledges and miraculously symbolizes His death and resurrection in your life (Romans 6:4-5).  There is also baptism in the Holy Spirit that will give believers power from God and access to numerous spiritual gifts (Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:4-8; Acts 2:4; Acts 8:15; Acts 19:2-6; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11).

These are all important steps for believers who desire to learn and grow in Christ. These are not normally accomplished quickly. Indeed, salvation is but a first step in a life time of transformation. God will transform you “from glory to glory” (2nd Corinthians 3:18), and it will take a life time of miraculous growth and experience.
