The Immovable Ladder
Why a Janitorial Item Tucked Away in the Old City of Jerusalem Matters to Christians Around the World Today
WHY is this picture so significant in our current cultural moment?
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre - the proposed site of the death and resurrection of Jesus - has been one of Jerusalem’s most iconic destinations since the 4th century. For many believers, this church is a beacon of faith and hope - and for good reason!
But do you see the ladder tucked underneath the righthand window? This ladder has been in that exact location since roughly 1852, immovable due to sometimes hostile property disputes between the 6 + Christian denominations which share the church building.
Who owns the section with the ladder? If that cannot be decided upon, the ladder cannot be moved.
This Immovable Ladder is emblematic of the sad reality of Church division. When we are not pursuing peace and walking by the Spirit, pride and disfunction can threaten Christian unity.
Disputes, no matter how complex or valid or relevant…. be they over property or politics or policy.… should never be allowed to overshadow the REALITY OF RECONCILIATION which was initiated through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Tucked away in Jerusalem’s Old City, the Immovable Ladder serves as an important reminder for Christians all around the world today 💜
